Experience the Magic of the River O’ Green in Downtown Tampa This Weekend!

by Brett Schiller

Every March, downtown Tampa transforms into a vibrant scene of emerald hues and festive cheer. If you’re searching for a unique way to kick off your St. Patrick's Day celebrations, look no further than the River O' Green Festival—where the Hillsborough River itself turns a dazzling shade of green!

This beloved Tampa tradition draws locals and visitors alike to Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park for a day filled with live music, delicious food trucks, family-friendly activities, and of course the spectacular sight of the river’s transformation. Each year, city crews release a safe, biodegradable dye into the river from boats near the park, gradually turning the water bright green as crowds gather along the Riverwalk to watch the moment unfold. Picture it: the downtown skyline reflected in sparkling green waters, laughter echoing from the lawn, and everyone donning their brightest shamrock attire. It’s a feast for the senses and a true celebration of community spirit.

The festival has become one of Tampa’s signature spring events, drawing thousands of attendees to the downtown waterfront and connecting seamlessly with the nearby Tampa Riverwalk, one of the city’s most popular attractions. Visitors often make a full day of it—strolling along the Riverwalk, stopping at local restaurants, or exploring nearby destinations like Armature Works after the festivities.

Whether you’re a longtime Tampa resident or just visiting, there’s something for everyone. Kids can enjoy arts and crafts, games, and face painting, while adults can sip on festive drinks and sample local bites from some of Tampa’s favorite food vendors. Don’t forget to bring your furry friends—there’s even a dog costume contest that’s guaranteed to get some laughs and plenty of photos.

Beyond the fun, the River O’ Green is a great example of how Tampa celebrates its waterfront. The eco-friendly dye used to color the river is safe for wildlife and breaks down naturally, allowing the Hillsborough River to return to its normal color shortly after the event.
